the todd harrison rock archive

questions my ego and i wish were frequently asked

q: what the hell is a rock archive?
a: it is my ongoing attempt to catalogue all of my performances and recordings -- including collaborations, shows as a member of other people's backing bands, solo ventures and one-off gigs with friends. it will probably always be badly in need of updates.

q: who the fuck are you to have a rock archive? for that matter: who the fuck are you, period?
a: it's really not that complicated. my name is todd, and i am a music nerd. being anal and nerdly about other people's music is fine for some people, but i'd much rather be anal and nerdly about my own.

q: have you really recorded and released all those albums?
a: yes and no. basically, i write, record and attempt to sell one recording every year. sometimes i make more than one record in a year -- to augment the annual projects, for example, or to document some event or occasion. these "extra" albums often turn into actual, y'know, releases, but not always. in other words, i have made many one-off eps and whatnot that do not appear on this list; what's included here are all the recordings that i distributed -- or intended to distribute, in the case of the two unreleased records -- to, say, a dozen people or more.

q: how many songs have you written?
a: more than you, i'll wager.

q: why do you record an album every year?
a: music is my life document. i don't take photographs, or keep much of a diary, or do any of the other things that most people do to preserve memories. instead, i make records. each of my recordings is a distillation of people who have affected my life, music and culture that's inspired me and events, environments and experiences of the past year that i needed to somehow capture and hold in my heart.

q: what do you mean by "limited release"?
a: "limited release" recordings are, generally, demos, eps or other giveaways of which i made a handful of copies for distribution to friends and sonic allies, or as parts of buy-one-get-one-free deals for the annual albums. technically, all my records are "limited release," in the sense that i don't actively keep any of them in stock. so the ones actually branded "limited release" are, in fact, really really limited.

q: how many records have you sold, in total?
a: not very many -- and of that small number, most were given away to friends. i most definitely do not find music to be a money-making venture, and that suits me just fine.

q: i'm tremendously fond of you, todd, and i want to experience even more of your internet goodness. please, will you feed my burgeoning obsession with you? do you, for example, have any music-related opinions you could share with me?
a: all you had to do was ask!
