the todd harrison rock archive narrowcasting "when is the last time you heard your favourite song on the radio?" the pitchforkmedia.com review of the smashing pumpkins' record machina/the machines of god asks this question with a level of indignation only a pitforkmedia.com review could possibly muster. but, for me, it's all too true: i never hear my favourite songs on the radio. okay, sure, there's classic rock radio and college stations, but they each come with a catch: the former are so filled with irritating "shock-jocks" that it's downright painful to tune in, and the latter have to serve such a wide body of underexposed music that they're frayed beyond recognition -- the two university stations in toronto prove this all too well. so i don't like overexposed industry bullshit music. does that make me a freak? i want to turn on the radio and hear "well, that was the latest single of wilco's new album, and right after this we'll have music by spiritualized, sparklehorse and massive attack." is that so wrong? it seems to me that there is a whole demographic that's not being serviced by radio, and if someone could find a way to sustain a station that played just-off-the-radar music, that person could make a friggin' fortune. or maybe i just wanna hear some good music on the radio. for a change. top :: home |
