folk-pop was a crutch. this album was cursed by aesthetic and broadband compromise, but it was, at the time, the most honest thing i’d done. it was both the hardest and easiest i'd made, and it ended up being by turns louder, quieter, more brash, more beautiful, more complex, and simpler than anything before it. a far more logical follow-up to sins, vices than the strands, it also featured, for the first time on one of my solo albums, guest musicians. the music must change.
