2000 shows

february 1
free times cafe, toronto

players:
me: acoustic guitar, vocals
set list:
n/a [all-request]
the craziest crowd ever. another "todd the human jukebox" evening.

march 29
free times cafe, toronto
as "todd harrison and the unseen guest"

players:
me: acoustic and electric guitars, vocals
danny monette: bass, acoustic and electric guitars, vocals
will culbert: drums, vocals
set list:
[all songs by pink floyd]
pigs on the wing (part 1)
dogs
pigs (three different ones)
sheep
pigs on the wing (part 2)
this was an amazing show. playing pink floyd's animals as a mostly acoustic trio was damn hard, but we did it. the best part was the turnout -- there were people at this show from all facets of my life. it was beautiful, and i was ecstatic.

may 2
free times cafe, toronto
as "todd harrison and the unseen guest"

players:
me: acoustic guitar, vocals
danny monette: acoustic guitar, vocals, harmonica
will culbert: percussion, vocals
set list:
n/a [improv set]
this show wasn't really as successful as i'd hoped it to be. when danny, will and i jammed in rehearsal, it was always a freakin' transcendental experience. but i guess we just couldn't pull it off on stage that night.

may 3 (afternoon)
contact alternative school, toronto
as "todd harrison and the unseen guest"

players:
me: acoustic guitar, vocals
danny monette: acoustic guitar, vocals, harmonica
will culbert: percussion
set list:
build me up, buttercup | the foundations
it’s all you do
pretty girl
happiness is a warm gun | the beatles
found your way out of it
in the aeroplane over the sea | neutral milk hotel
the scene for this gig was a kitchen in an urban alternative secondary school, on an alt.school "info" day. basically, the audience was a lot of laid back, funky people interspersed with uncomfortably out-of-place bureaucrats, all sitting on plastic, urine-resistant chairs on a crappy tile floor. we played well, though danny broke a string right at the end.

may 3 (evening)
free times cafe, toronto
as "todd harrison and the unseen guest"

players:
me: acoustic guitar, vocals
danny monette: acoustic guitar, vocals, harmonica
will culbert: percussion
approximate set list:
fifty mission cap | the tragically hip
eye of the tiger | survivor
mexican hat jam
why don't we do it in the road? | the beatles
on the road again (altered lyrics) | canned heat
this was a bizarre show. tom brought a huge tv into the free times and we watched the leafs game and played sets during the intermissions. what's especially significant to me about this gig is that it was on this nite –- whilst quite altered and as the wee morning hours approached –- that i came up with the band name "trucks leaving."

saturday, may 20
vern's cafe, toronto
with trucks leaving

players:
me: acoustic guitar, bass, vocals
danny monette: acoustic guitars, bass, vocals
will culbert: percussion, vocals
set list:
the peeker
it's all you do
you
flagrante delicto
el scorcho | weezer
shame
read a book
[plus a second, all-request set]
this show (a fundraiser for a local alternative school) was one of trucks leaving's finer moments -- especially the covers-by-request second set, which came complete with a pink floyd and a violent femmes marathon.

friday, june 16
moon and sun original music ballroom
tranzac club, toronto
with trucks leaving

players:
me: acoustic guitars, vocals
danny monette: electric guitar, vocals
will culbert: percussion, vocals
steve kado: bass, vocals
set list:
it’s all you do
i can't explain | the who
flagrante delicto
the peeker
d'yer mak'er | led zeppelin
identicall
this was a very elaborate show with several acts, and we went on last. there are two things i remember specifically about this night. first, i came down with massive stomach pains early in the evening, and sought out a package of baby carrots to save myself (it worked). second, rob -- who i didn't know at the time -- followed us around with a video camera all night, asking really stupid questions and being very intrusive. i’ve never seen the footage, but will says my rock star antics are hilarious –- i think i threatened to kill rob if he didn’t turn the goddamn camera off. sorry, dude.

chaotic. outdoors. crappy p.a. last-minute bass amp rental madness. broken bass. snapped strings galore. free veggie dogs. great show!

july 25
free times cafe, toronto

players:
me: acoustic guitar, vocals
set list:
girl from the north country | bob dylan
shame
schizophrenia | sonic youth
drag you down
this wasn't much of a set, and to be honest i didn't play very well. but the audience was very attentive and a few people bought copies of sins, vices -- which was nice because, up until that night, i'd given up on trying to sell them. plus, somebody came up to me after the show and asked about my lyrics. i was flattered that he paid such close attention.

july 28
free times cafe, toronto

players:
me: acoustic guitar, vocals
set list:
(first set -- by request)
breathe | pink floyd
free fallin' | tom petty
blister in the sun | violent femmes
help me make it through the night | joe cocker

(second set)
who do we think they are?
drag you down
d'yer mak'er | led zeppelin
flagrante delicto
these rails
i’m on fire | bruce springsteen
tainted love | soft cell
this was a great night. it was really laid-back, and i got to play two sets –- one early in the evening, and one at the very end. my 12-string sounded better than it ever had before, and i used it for the whole second set. the main feature of the show was a short documentary of the western-canada indie band the smalls, directed by a really down-to-earth and cool guy named john stiles. excellent film, too.

july 29
free times cafe, toronto

players:
me: acoustic guitars, vocals
set list:
lover you know (soothe me)
these rails
schizophrenia | sonic youth
drag you down
freeze me
it's good to be king | tom petty
who do we think they are?
karma police | radiohead
miss misery | elliot smith
joyriders
yet another in my continuing series of shows with a contingent of loud, obnoxious audience members. ah well, those who listened seemed to enjoy it, and isn't that what really matters in the long run?

august 9
free times cafe, toronto

players:
me: acoustic guitar, vocals
will culbert: drums on "schizophrenia"
approximate set list:
schizophrenia | sonic youth
springdale park (pleasant feelings on arriving in the country)
these rails
drag you down
blister in the sun | violent femmes
flagrante delicto
california uber alles | dead kennedys
this is the gig where, confusingly enough, i was the opening act for my own band -- from which i was dismissed a month or so earlier. my set was not especially memorable, save for the fact that steve insisted i play a dk song...on acoustic guitar. oh my.

september 1

wish you were here | pink floyd
these rails
flagrante delicto
drag you down
girl of the north country | bob dylan
eastern avenue
laid | james
blister in the sun | violent femmes
lover you know (soothe me)
the wakening
i shared this bill with michele schmidt and adelphia, and it was a lot of fun. for some reason, however, i can recall very little about it. one thing comes to mind, however: i attempted a lap dance for ryan, who was very ill and thoroughly unimpressed by my antics.

september 3

set list:
lover you know (soothe me)
goddess on a hiway | mercury rev
these rails
buffalo
street spirit (fade out) | radiohead
the wakening
brown-eyed girl | van morrison
why did i play mercury rev and radiohead songs at a community arts centre? i was one of three people under 40 in the crowd. sometimes i’m stupid.

this was the worst venue i've ever played. i can't even remember what songs i did. i don't wanna talk about it. adelphia and ariel were very good.

not one of my most successful outings, but the second set was fun. there was about ten people in the venue, and we just had a silly, stupid time. boo.

oh! sweet nuthin' | the velvet underground
my other gig that night, and one of the most destructive, chaotic sets i've ever been a part of. appropriately frightening.
