the todd harrison rock archive 2000 shows february 1 free times cafe, toronto players: me: acoustic guitar, vocals set list: n/a [all-request] the craziest crowd ever. another "todd the human jukebox" evening. march 29 free times cafe, toronto as "todd harrison and the unseen guest" players: me: acoustic and electric guitars, vocals danny monette: bass, acoustic and electric guitars, vocals will culbert: drums, vocals set list: [all songs by pink floyd] pigs on the wing (part 1) dogs pigs (three different ones) sheep pigs on the wing (part 2) this was an amazing show. playing pink floyd's animals as a mostly acoustic trio was damn hard, but we did it. the best part was the turnout -- there were people at this show from all facets of my life. it was beautiful, and i was ecstatic. may 2 free times cafe, toronto as "todd harrison and the unseen guest" players: me: acoustic guitar, vocals danny monette: acoustic guitar, vocals, harmonica will culbert: percussion, vocals set list: n/a [improv set] this show wasn't really as successful as i'd hoped it to be. when danny, will and i jammed in rehearsal, it was always a freakin' transcendental experience. but i guess we just couldn't pull it off on stage that night. may 3 (afternoon) contact alternative school, toronto as "todd harrison and the unseen guest" players: me: acoustic guitar, vocals danny monette: acoustic guitar, vocals, harmonica will culbert: percussion set list: build me up, buttercup | the foundations it’s all you do pretty girl happiness is a warm gun | the beatles found your way out of it in the aeroplane over the sea | neutral milk hotel the scene for this gig was a kitchen in an urban alternative secondary school, on an alt.school "info" day. basically, the audience was a lot of laid back, funky people interspersed with uncomfortably out-of-place bureaucrats, all sitting on plastic, urine-resistant chairs on a crappy tile floor. we played well, though danny broke a string right at the end. may 3 (evening) free times cafe, toronto as "todd harrison and the unseen guest" players: me: acoustic guitar, vocals danny monette: acoustic guitar, vocals, harmonica will culbert: percussion approximate set list: fifty mission cap | the tragically hip eye of the tiger | survivor mexican hat jam why don't we do it in the road? | the beatles on the road again (altered lyrics) | canned heat this was a bizarre show. tom brought a huge tv into the free times and we watched the leafs game and played sets during the intermissions. what's especially significant to me about this gig is that it was on this nite –- whilst quite altered and as the wee morning hours approached –- that i came up with the band name "trucks leaving." saturday, may 20 vern's cafe, toronto with trucks leaving players: me: acoustic guitar, bass, vocals danny monette: acoustic guitars, bass, vocals will culbert: percussion, vocals set list: the peeker it's all you do you flagrante delicto el scorcho | weezer shame read a book [plus a second, all-request set] this show (a fundraiser for a local alternative school) was one of trucks leaving's finer moments -- especially the covers-by-request second set, which came complete with a pink floyd and a violent femmes marathon. friday, june 16 moon and sun original music ballroom tranzac club, toronto with trucks leaving players: me: acoustic guitars, vocals danny monette: electric guitar, vocals will culbert: percussion, vocals steve kado: bass, vocals set list: it’s all you do i can't explain | the who flagrante delicto the peeker d'yer mak'er | led zeppelin identicall this was a very elaborate show with several acts, and we went on last. there are two things i remember specifically about this night. first, i came down with massive stomach pains early in the evening, and sought out a package of baby carrots to save myself (it worked). second, rob -- who i didn't know at the time -- followed us around with a video camera all night, asking really stupid questions and being very intrusive. i’ve never seen the footage, but will says my rock star antics are hilarious –- i think i threatened to kill rob if he didn’t turn the goddamn camera off. sorry, dude. tuesday, june 27 inglestock 2000 inglenook alternative school, toronto with trucks leaving players: me: acoustic and electric guitars, vocals, bass danny monette: electric guitar, vocals will culbert: percussion, vocals steve kado: bass, vocals set list: holes | mercury rev it's all you do roadrunner | the modern lovers who do we think they are? comfortably numb | pink floyd the peeker what goes on | the velvet underground found your way out of it chaotic. outdoors. crappy p.a. last-minute bass amp rental madness. broken bass. snapped strings galore. free veggie dogs. great show! july 25 free times cafe, toronto players: me: acoustic guitar, vocals set list: girl from the north country | bob dylan shame schizophrenia | sonic youth drag you down this wasn't much of a set, and to be honest i didn't play very well. but the audience was very attentive and a few people bought copies of sins, vices -- which was nice because, up until that night, i'd given up on trying to sell them. plus, somebody came up to me after the show and asked about my lyrics. i was flattered that he paid such close attention. july 28 free times cafe, toronto players: me: acoustic guitar, vocals set list: (first set -- by request) breathe | pink floyd free fallin' | tom petty blister in the sun | violent femmes help me make it through the night | joe cocker schizophrenia | sonic youth (second set) who do we think they are? drag you down d'yer mak'er | led zeppelin flagrante delicto these rails i’m on fire | bruce springsteen tainted love | soft cell this was a great night. it was really laid-back, and i got to play two sets –- one early in the evening, and one at the very end. my 12-string sounded better than it ever had before, and i used it for the whole second set. the main feature of the show was a short documentary of the western-canada indie band the smalls, directed by a really down-to-earth and cool guy named john stiles. excellent film, too. july 29 free times cafe, toronto players: me: acoustic guitars, vocals set list: lover you know (soothe me) these rails schizophrenia | sonic youth drag you down freeze me it's good to be king | tom petty who do we think they are? karma police | radiohead miss misery | elliot smith joyriders yet another in my continuing series of shows with a contingent of loud, obnoxious audience members. ah well, those who listened seemed to enjoy it, and isn't that what really matters in the long run?
